Hi @moviecoverage Ive looked for your email to send a trailer. but I cant find it 🤔. Kristen Stewart plays Jean Seberg in the first trailer for the upcoming biopic on the French New Wave star. As a viewer who is very familiar with the work of Jean Seberg I simply can't accept Kristen in that role. She simply doesn't measure up to the character she is trying to play. She probably did well in the Twilight movies because she really has "dead eyes. Seberg was vibrant and alive in all of her roles, a talent Kristen has yet to develop. Sometimes clever, often clumsy, and almost always denying Kristen Stewart the space she needs, Seberg" is a mess from start to finish. Editors note: This review was originally published at the 2019 Venice Film Festival. Amazon releases the film on Friday, December 13. A fitting punishment for anyone who felt that “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” didnt lavish enough love upon the late Sharon Tate, Benedict Andrews blandly ill-conceived “ Seberg ” is proof enough that extra screen time isnt the secret to a more satisfying cinematic séance. Which isnt to say that this scattered look at the last years of Jean Sebergs life gives the actress its undivided attention. Less a biopic about the “Breathless” star than a paranoid thriller that revolves around her fateful role in the FBIs COINTELPRO surveillance program, Andrews film might position Seberg as its subject, but it ultimately just uses her as a screen on which to project a story about someone else. Whereas Quentin Tarantino suffused Tates memory into the very soul of his revisionist elegy, liberating the murdered starlet from her own iconography, Andrews — whose film also takes place in the late 1960s — inadvertently suggests that Seberg is only worth remembering for the residual effect she had on the people who saw her. Sometimes clever, often clumsy, and virtually always denying Kristen Stewart the space required to breathe new life into the films namesake, “Seberg” feels off-balance from almost the moment it starts. A short prologue, set on the day Seberg was almost burned alive while shooting Otto Premingers “Saint Joan, ” casts a palpably dark shadow over the events to come, but Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouses labored script forces the scene to carry too much weight. The rest of the film makes plenty of time for Seberg to throw shade at “Paint Your Wagon” and lament the relative irrelevance of her own work, but these few seconds — in which Seberg is nearly killed for pretending to be a real martyr — provide our only meaningful evidence that she wanted more from life. On the other hand, “Seberg” is most compelling as a movie that questions why people choose to walk down certain paths; as a story about the very human compulsions that can attract us towards larger causes. When the action picks up in 1968, Seberg — now rocking a slightly longer version of the blonde pixie cut that she helped to immortalize — is leaving her husband (Yvan Attal) and son in turbulent Paris and flying to L. A. for a big audition. While living it up in first class, this lilywhite girl from Marshalltown, Iowa just happens to cross paths with Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie) an outgoing but controversial leader of the Black Power movement. They make eyes at each other, and Seberg decides to join the handsome stranger for a widely publicized salute when they touch down in California (an awkwardly staged moment in a movie thats full of them. She drives over to Jamals Compton house that night because she wants to “make a difference. ” And she will — once theyre done having sex. While the relationship between Seberg and Jamal could easily have filled an entire film on its own, Seberg isnt the only person here whose horniness leads to an enriched sense of humanity: A young FBI agent named Jack Solomon is soon put on a similar path. Played by a clenched Jack OConnell, this paper-thin caricature is tasked with listening in on Sebergs every move, and helping his senior partner — a volatile and sinister Vince Vaughn — do whatever they can to disrupt the actress controversial efforts to help black Americans unify against systemic racism (the movie questions if Seberg is just a “tourist” with a deep pocketbook, only to back towards the conclusion that motives are less important than results. Despite being married to a beautiful and ambitious med student (Margaret Qualley, whos managed to find a pair of shoes since we last saw her) Solomon is smitten with Seberg as soon as he sees her. Its “La La Land” meets “The Lives of Others, ” as “Seberg” effectively becomes a movie about a lovesick agent following his penis to the profound realization that an unconstitutional government surveillance program designed to oppress marginalized people might not be such a great thing after all. Live and learn! When Jamal — who only speaks in excruciatingly clunky dialogue like “you run around with a handful of nails looking for a cross to die on! ” — tells Seberg that the world is changed one mind at a time, youll have a sinking feeling that Solomons mind is the one the movie cares about most. In a film that feels like more of a missed opportunity than an outright disaster, the biggest shame of all is that Andrews doesnt probe as deeply into Seberg as he does into the foil this screenplay has invented for her. Stewart was certainly up to the challenge. Pivoting away from low-status, high-quality parts that contradict her outsized public persona, Stewart embraces her uncharacteristically glamorous and headstrong role — one iconic actress possessing the spirit of another (and doing so in a handful of spectacular costumes, including a dazzling pink gown and a yellow chiffon bathing suit that glimmers underwater. The most engaging scenes in “Seberg” invite her to own her power, and also to temper it with the naïvete and vulnerability of someone who cant quite appreciate the full extent to which everything she does will ripple across time and space. Shes always playing with fire, even when she sets them herself, and her best intentions often lead to her worst agonies… as well as to an interminable series of paranoid freakouts, as Seberg spends the twilight of her life being gaslit by the American government. But Stewarts performance is often undercut by a film that seems intent on keeping Seberg at a remove. Andrews plays with the idea of windows and screens in order to layer the distance between life and the movies, compassion and complicity, seeing and surveilling, but that approach — luminously rendered in Rachel Morrisons cinematography — tends to backfire in a way that forces viewers to reject all of these many different realities. Everything comes to feel inauthentic, to the point where “Seberg” only comes to life when it commits to full-bore theatricality. Andrews is an accomplished stage director whose “Una” was an arrestingly choreographed masterclass in sustained claustrophobia, and there are flashes in “Seberg” — a tense moment in the Solomon house; a bit of hide-and-seek between Seberg and Jamal — when the blocking expresses a vitality that the writing never does. But Andrews is lost at sea whenever things widen out, and his keen eye cant save this woebegotten movie from its own shapelessness. Bonjour tristesse, indeed. He not aging, another proof that vampire do exist. Did not know vampires were so aquatic. I used to study this type of activism and I am quite familiar with this story and its character.
This movie was trying to prostrate as it was positively event when the real story was nothing what that movie was made out to be. There is a lot of stories in this movie that needs to addressing to. I'll leave a few examples in here:
First of off, this lady was never had a romance with this Civil Rights activist.
Secondly, the FBI was not harassing her all because of hers political, nor because of hers involvement with Civil Rights, except it was because of her being involvement with a racist black group that was attempting to rob a several business and motivate to kill the enforcement.
Lastly, this lady was arrested for treason, publicity destruction, hatred, and harassing the soldiers whose return from Vietnam.
This movie needs to re-fix with fact-checking, instead of doing it to supports the propaganda.
I'll give it a 10 star once they fix it, but I know they won't.

We recently found out (9/12/18) that the Chinese baker's ammonium - choufen - is roughly half ammonium bicarbonate and half baking soda. If you're working with pure ammonium bicarbonate (i.e. baker's ammonia in the West) instead of that 4g Chinese baker's ammonium go with 2g ammonium bicarbonate and 2g baking soda. We've had a couple people that live in the USA/Europe report an extremely intense ammonium smell from their buns. we believe this is likely the reason, as we've had reports of successes from people Hong Kong and Singapore-based. So a few notes: 1. Many recipes (both on the Chinese and English language internet) use yeast instead of a natural sourdough starter. This will not give the correct texture to the Char Siu Bao. The basic idea behind Char Siu Bao dough is that mix of lactic acid from the starter and the super alkaline baker's ammonia. 2. If you make this, there's two big issues that people tend to run up against - first, yellow dough. If your baozi end up yellow that's a sign that the dough is overly alkaline, and that the dough has not been fermented for a long enough period of time. The splash of vinegar helps preserve the color as well. What we used in the video was about a half tablespoon of vinegar essence, which's about 20% acetic acid. 3. Second issue is lack of 'cracking. Your Baozi shouldn't be opening along the pleats, the ammonia should spread the Baozi when steaming so that it cracks naturally. This could be caused by either (1) not enough leavening agents (2) not incorporating the ammonia well enough into the dough (3) wrapping the Baozi too loosely or (4) your steaming heat not being hot enough. 4. Speaking of which, restaurants use these really intense contraptions that shoot pressurized steam up into their steaming racks. Using that sort of set-up, they can steam these in like five minutes. Point being though, make sure you seal that guy in real good with those wet towels if (like us) whatever you're using doesn't have a heavy lid. 5. Lastly, I know this all might've seemed a bit overwhelming. This is a restaurant dish, ain't exactly something that a normal person would whip up on a Wednesday night. A deep dive into Dim Sum reveals just how incredible that meal is - this stuff's like a level of complexity that most other cuisines would reserve for like special occasion festival foods. It's really a testament to the brilliance and organizational prowess of these places that they can pump out mountains of this stuff for like a few bucks a pop. So even if you never make this, I hope that you can appreciate it a little more next time you're out at Dim Sum. Oh, and to all the Cantonese speakers out there apologies for my brutal mispronouciation of 臭粉, and continuously (mistakenly) defaulting back to the Mandarin pronunciation for Char Siu Bao sauce. In the future, I think I'm just gunna use Cantonese name for the dishes themselves but Mandarin for any ingredients/techniques. at least until the day I properly learn Cantonese. My English in the narration's bad enough as is, whenever I toss in Mandarin it's worse, and any time I try to reach for the Cantonese things just start sounding downright silly. Edit: To all of y'all that're saying that this's too difficult. listen, I get it. But here's something I don't quite understand: go search YouTube for Western-style sourdough bread. You'll find precisely zero comments saying ahh. this is too involved! Like proper sourdough bread, proper Char Siu Bao is involved. If you're not into making it yourself, totally understandable - give you local Dim Sum restaurant some more well deserved business.

Those two eye shots are so damn effective! The part with him behind the door scared the shit out of me the first time I saw it.
IGNORE THE BAD REVIEWS! This film was very fun and enjoyable. I think people dislike anything with female leads these days, or anything that even touches on feminism. This film hits on a sore spot clearly - date rape, girls being raped on campuses, and the police not believing them. I guess this made people uncomfortable. It was good - made it's point. I fully enjoyed it and so did everyone else in that cinema. It's a slasher film - not a philosophical one so just do not expect too much from it. Also, embrace women trying to have their voice heard, it's almost 2020! I recommend it fully. Go with an open mind and enjoy it. Well done ladies - you did a great job.

This would have been better served with an original title instead of having to live up to a classic. It would receive far less vitriol if it weren't associated with the original. Studios just can't let the siren song of tying things to previously successful properties just for name recognition go, and it does this film a disservice. The target audience for this film doesn't even know Black Christmas 1974 existed. The audience that does is not going to react well to this ones message as seen all over social media and these reviews.
The cutdown to PG13 is really felt while watching. The cuts are too abrupt during the kills and take you out of it. What would have been a pretty amusing retort in the climax was just left hanging as a "suck my (total silence. that was a dud. You couldn't have the actress come in and dub over the word *ss if the assumed cl*t was too much for PG13? I think they censored themselves too much fearing combined with the rape themes the MPAA would still give them an R?
Yes the message was heavy handed but it's the horror genre your allowed to be over the top.
Imogen was amazing as usual some of the other characters didn't really have time to develop. I appreciate a tight old school hour and a half but this needed some room to breathe and perhaps everything wouldn't have felt so crammed down your throat. If these girls were shown living their lives a bit and not constantly talking about men and the evils they have wrought. It would humanize a bit and make the medicine go down smoother perhaps?
Overall I look forward to the unrated version and maybe an extended cut.

So resolutely old school in every way, from its 10 th century source material and setting to its use of hand-drawn frames that self-consciously recall the watercolor and ink art of ancient Japanese art, Princess Kaguya almost looks experimental compared to most anime films these days, with their sci-fi settings, goggle-eyed cartoony characters, and heavy reliance on CGI. Its not even easy to see to which audiences this would appeal beyond hardcore animation buffs, especially since the feisty female protagonist is neither the sexy bombshell type adolescent males like in the usual adult-skewed anime, nor the kind of simpering kawaii cutie typical in kids-targeted fare. Indeed, with its 137-minute running time and sad, heartbreaking denoument, it would be a tough watch for the family market, who largely expect happy endings and bedtime-friendly proportions. Nevertheless, putting all those commercial considerations aside, its a lovely piece of work. Princess Kaguya is all thoughtfully rendered set pieces melded together, which means it doesnt have the same bell-curve-like arcs to its narrative that weve come to expect in most mainstream films. Each moment is just as momentous or trivial as the other. Standout sequences which show off Takahata and his teams tremendous flair for expressing movement include a sequence where the baby princess goes from struggling to crawl to learning to walk in literally a few steps, and a terrific, stylized sequence where. all smeary speed lines dramatic key frames. where she dreams as an adult of escape from the life of lady-like behavior and courtly manners her father tries to establish for her in the city. The tension between obeisance to family and social norms versus self-expression rings resonantly throughout as a major theme. Music, ranging from traditional koto plucking to the obligatory pop song over the end credits, adds emotional depth and is deployed organically throughout the story. Likewise, the spare backgrounds and economically drawn foreground characters feel entirely and pleasingly of a piece, marking another difference between the usual run-of-the-mill anime, with its hyper-detailed backgrounds and limited-movement characters. A few months ago, I went to the manuscript exhibition of Japanese animation "Studio Ghibli" in Hong Kong Heritage Museum. There were so many visitors. Everyone came here for Miyazaki Hayao, but I came for another director Isao Takahata. Miyazaki Hayao's Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle are riddles for me forever, so I prefer the works of Isao Takahata relatively, easy to be understood but profound too.
Farewell Firefly of Isao Takahata was criticized before: as the aggressive nation in the war, Japan was dressed as the victim of war in the film. Actually, Farewell Firefly is across the region to tell the destruction of human life and happiness by war, and this kind of destruction appears again in his new work The Tale of Princess Kaguya.
The movie opens with the myth that the bamboo even gives birth to a beautiful girl, named "Bamboo" and she grows faster than normal people (therefore to meet the tragedy quicker. The old man thinks she is a princess, so she was sent to the palace.
The movie shots are very special that most of the backgrounds are static, however, the stationary scenery on the background is already very beautiful, and Bamboo in the foreground is lively; while since she leaves her hometown, her name is changed to Kaguya which means light shine. Then it is turn for Bamboo to become stationary, as she could not appear and move freely due to the ethics. Thereby her freedom is forbidden and happiness is vanished.
The ending of the story is different from what I have heard - Bamboo returned to the hometown and found her lover had married and had a son. The movie has this scene, but it is just a dream of her lover, and Bamboo does not know his marriage in the dream too. On the contrary, the ending echoes the beginning, with a sense of myth. Bamboo cries to the moon, then the Buddha sends a messenger to pick her up. When she is put on feathers, all her memory losses, but she still takes a glance at the hometown at the end.

Like many other Ghibli fans I didn't like the Yamadas back in the day but Takahata Isao has returned with a blast.
The film is beautiful. The animation is simple yet exquisite, reminiscent of old Japanese watercolours. Special kudos go to Joe Hisaishi for his superb soundtrack - the final scene and its music left me almost in tears.
The only problems lie in the sometimes slow development of the plot and a few loose ends. There are also tiny deviations from the original story, but I felt that it was as true to it as possible. All in all a beautifully drawn, beautifully crafted movie, solid voice acting (for a Japanese movie at least) and, again, the beautiful music. Excellent job, Ghibli.
Hats down to Mr. Takahata as well.

Though the original fairy tale was certainly intended for children, I'm not sure many children would enjoy this kind of movie in this age, so it's probably more of a pleasure for mature viewers who know what kind of story and storytelling to expect. Art & Animation – 10 The first thing you will notice about this work is its unusual artstyle. You can clearly see Isao Takahata here, but at the same time the sketchy style is something you will rarely find in animated works. It's more like a moving artwork. Ghibli movies are usually very expensive and very well animated, and this one is no exception (in fact it was the most expensive and most delayed work of the studio, and predicted to be unprofitable due to its high cost and low mainstream appeal from the beginning. Even if you are not a fan of the artstyle, some moments are undeniably breathtaking such as the Kaguya running scenes. The animation is definitely a pleasure for the eyes: Unique, positively artsy, very fairy-taleish, very Japanese and certainly beautiful. Sound – 9 The music was composed by Joe Hisaishi who usually only does the score for Hayao Miyazaki's movies. His orchestral style suits the atmosphere of the story very well. I particularly noticed the music in the first and the last part of the movie. It's also nice to see so many traditional Japanese elements in this score. Kaguya, for instance, plays the koto (a Japanese pluck instrument) but the traditional music is not limited to actual in-movie music. All in all Hisaishi did what he always does: He delivered a great score with some memorable tracks. The calm and beautiful ending song leaves you with a nice aftertaste after the end of the movie. The voice acting is also quite well done. There are many old people and children in this movie, and I was particularly happy that those children were actually voiced by real children. Thus conversations and laughter sound very natural. Kaguya's voice is very pleasant to hear, and her voice actress delivered a vivid performance, most notable in Kaguya's energetic moments. Story & Characters – 7 It is very hard to properly rate the story and the characters. Since the movie is based on a fairy tale, the story itself is fairly simple, and so are the characters. It is very easy to follow the events and naturally there are not many surprises or innovations. There is, however, lots of charme found in this kind of presentation. Isao Takahata was always very skilled in portaying the interactions between humans and daily human emotions and actions. You can witness all of this here as well. Though the characters are generally not very developed, it is easy to understand Kaguya's feelings and her colorful personality makes her memorable. The other characters act mostly according to her roles: The caring mother who understands Kaguya's feelings, the charing father who does everything to make Kaguya happy, not understanding what actually makes her happy. The children that act as her friends and family. The five nobleman – some not so noble – who woo her and fail. All of those characters are pretty stereotypical, but they do their job well and never wanted to do more. The story unfolds in a more or less predictable way, except for the end which might be a surprise, especially if you are more familiar with western folklore. The beginning was very executeddone: Kaguya's rapid development was portayed beautifully, as was her personality. In the second part of the movie the pacing is a bit slower – not much happens, actually –, but it gets better again toward the ending. Value – 9 "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter" is a very famous Japanese fairy tale, and this movie is unique in many ways: It is most likely the most elaborate and expensive adaption of a Japanese fairy tale we have seen in animation movies so far. The artstyle deserves lots of praise and definitely makes the whole experience memorable. The storytelling itself, though there's basically no narration, captures the atmosphere of a classic fairy tale very well. Furthermore Isao Takahata is definitely an interesting director and this is his last work, so fans of his other movies should definitely watch The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Fairy tale adaptions used to be very common in the early age of animated movies, but lately Japan has produced few such works. This might be one of the last attempts to bring a classic tale to the big screens without modernizing it unnecessarily. Enjoyment – 7 I definitely enjoyed the beginning of the movie a lot. It got a bit tedious in the second part – there was too much repetition in the part involving the five wooers, and it was obvious how Kaguya felt from the beginning, so I didn't enjoy this part very much apart from some really well-animated scenes and some nice moments. The last part of the movie gets better, though – especially the little dreamlike romance scene towards the end was fantastic. Overall I enjoyed this movie, but it is very long (140+ minutes) and it definitely would not have hurt to remove or shorten a couple of scenes. Final verdict: Watch this movie if you want to see a well-animated, well-told classic Japanese fairy tale. The movie is beautiful in many ways, but don't expect a complex story, a typical Ghibli movie, a typical Takahata movie (what's that, anyway. or a typical anime movie at all. The emotional reaction you will feel will very much depend on how much you can sympathize with Kaguya. Though her emotions are very well depicted, there is a natural distance between the watcher and the fairy-tale characters, so even though there are heart-warming and sad scenes, they might not leave a huge impact on you.

It being in Spanish made it that much more awesome. William and Alicia played great chemistry between their characters even not long after they met each other in character you can see the chemistry "Victor" and "Sarai" gave off each other without words. And I felt the action was there in the movie. I'm hoping they continue the book series into movies.

Leading Lady Alicia "The Body" Sanz is so wonderfully at home in the altogether (both in the shower and while being strip-searched for a tracking device) that her scenes could exist separately and still be a box office hit. 8 out of 10 for the movie. 10 out of 10 for Miss Sanz. But despite being based on the first of seven (so far) interlocking pulp romantic-thrillers by J. A. Redmerski, Matias Moltrasio s feature directorial debut isnt splashy or assured enough to leave one wanting more, and the narrative awkwardly completes one arc and begins another after the two-thirds point. Opening on approximately 150 U. S. screens Dec. 6, the film is certainly a viable commercial item among Spanish-speaking audiences. But lets hope any follow-ups leave a stronger impression. The drug lord soon sends goons and his venomous sister (Thanya Lopez) after the uneasily allied duo, being enraged by the desertion of his “favorite. ” Meanwhile, Javier insists on keeping Sarai bound much of the time — seemingly just so she can squirm helplessly in her panties — and communicates with his brother Niklas (Adrian Lastra) who is also in some murky secret organization called “The Order. ” After a few shootouts, the film simply leaves behind what had appeared its principal plot engine (the threat of Javier and company) embarking belatedly on a new focus. Our leads are now glamorous co-conspirators in the business of meting out justice to other wealthy international bad guys, the first being an Italian hedonist (Ettore DAlessandro. The episodic nature of Levy and Jeff Goldbergs script isnt smoothed over by Moltrasios handling, which in its over-dependence on fade-outs seems designed for TV-commercial breaks. Even as a luxe fantasy of danger and hotness, the film falls short — though competently assembled in general, real high style is lacking.
